A postpartum doula is a professional who offers nonjudgmental evidence-based support for parents of newborns.

  • Emotional Support: Doulas offer reassurance, empathy, and a listening ear. They can help parents navigate the emotional ups and downs of the postpartum period, such as feeling overwhelmed, experiencing mood swings, or adjusting to the new family dynamics.

  • Physical Support: They help with physical recovery after childbirth by providing tips and assistance with things like pelvic floor exercises, breastfeeding, and infant care. They can also assist with light household chores, meal preparation, and help parents get some rest.

  • Breastfeeding Assistance: Doulas are knowledgeable about breastfeeding and can provide guidance on latch, positioning, and troubleshooting common issues like sore nipples or low milk supply.

  • Infant Care: They may help with baby care tasks such as diapering, bathing, swaddling, and soothing techniques, giving parents a chance to relax or sleep.

  • Information and Resources: Postpartum doulas can provide education on topics such as infant sleep, babywearing, and newborn development. They also connect parents with other professionals (lactation consultants, pediatricians, mental health resources, etc.) if needed.

  • Partner Support: They can support partners by helping them adjust to the new family dynamic, offering advice on how they can best support the mother and baby, and encouraging self-care for the partner as well.

This depends on your individual family's needs and preferences.

Some parents choose to hire a postpartum doula prior to baby being born. This allows time for you to get to know your doula. Your doula can recommend baby products, help with nursery set up and other tasks that will help make things run smoothly once baby is born.

Other parents may not even know postpartum doulas exist until after their baby is born! We are here for that as well! We are happy to offer support however works best for your family.

There is no wrong time to hire a doula!
